Neighborhood Housing Services of the Lehigh Valley (NHS) was established in May 1981 as the 100th
such local program through which neighborhood residents work together to improve
their homes and their neighborhoods. The
purpose of NHS of the Lehigh Valley is to renew pride, restore confidence, build a sense of
neighborhood identity, promote reinvestment and revitalize the NHS
neighborhoods. This is accomplished through the efforts of the local residents,
acting in cooperation with financial institutions, corporate enterprises, the
business community, foundations and local governments. NHS of the Lehigh Valley is based on a concept started in Pittsburgh in 1968 which pools the
resources of residents, business and government to revitalize a declining
neighborhood. NHS of the Lehigh Valley is one of over 240 organizations working in neighborhoods
nationwide that make up the NeighborWorks network. NHS activities include: Lending NeighborWorks America (NWA), formerly known as Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation of Washington D.C., is a public, non-profit organization, created by an act of Congress, to nurture and strengthen local partnerships like the NHS of the Lehigh Valley. Through NWA, NHS of the Lehigh Valley gains access to technical assistance and training. While continuing to focus revitalization efforts on our neighborhood service area, which includes the neighborhoods of Old Allentown, Old Fairgrounds and the 7th Street Corridor, NHS of the Lehigh Valley also develops and administers home ownership programs in the cities of Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton and the remainder of Lehigh and Northampton Counties. |
